Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. A child with ASD can be described as someone who has deficits in social skills, communication skills, and restricted/repetitive patterns of behavior.
What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior.
Behavior analysis helps us to understand:
How behavior works
How behavior is affected by the environment
How learning takes place
The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning.
How does ABA treat Autism?
ABA therapy helps clients with Autism to develop on their delayed skills. Programs are individualized and are provided in different environments (center, home, school, and community). Programs involve one-to-one teaching as well as group instruction.
ABA therapy programs can help to:
Increase language and communication skills
Improve attention, social skills, memory, self-help skills, and academics
Decrease problem behaviors (also referred to as challenging behaviors/maladaptive behavior)
The goal of any ABA program is to help each child work on skills that will help them become more independent and successful in the short term as well as in the future.
What is the best age for ABA?
ABA is effective for individuals of ALL ages! However, early intervention is the KEY to SUCCESS! Beginning ABA intervention in a child's early years (as young as 2) has demonstrated better treatment outcomes.
